Hey everyone!
I just wanted to create a post to inform you all of an idea I had in regards to raising awareness for our cause. I think it would be interesting—if I can make it work—to create a book that incorporates facts, real-life stories, and pictures to portray the life of a family who has a child with cancer, and the life of the child as well. It would inform the public of the struggles involved with being a child with cancer or the family of a child with cancer (including financial difficulties, emotional difficulties, etc) through facts; interviews with children, families, survivors, and maybe even doctors or hospital staff who have worked with these people; letters written by children with cancer; and pictures (of children, their families, the hospitals etc), among other things. We could talk about the Be a Star Foundation, our cause and event, and ways to help these families and children out as well.
Although it would be rather difficult, I think it would be amazing if I could get all the information I need and put the book together as soon as possible so that we can actually get it published! If we get it published we can speak about it at our event and even sell copies there as well. To get more people interested in the book, we can try to speak to news stations and ask them to mention it (didn’t someone say we could get the news to cover our event?) and do other things to raise publicity. I’m sure people would be interested in buying the book and I think it would be a great way to raise awareness. I’m not entirely sure how I’d write it yet. I can tell the stories as biographical accounts or include actual interviews, for example. I love to write, so maybe I can even create poems or something of the sort to include in the book as well (ones that relate to the cause, of course). I’m not entirely sure yet, but I’ll make sure to keep you all updated on things as I figure them out.
As of now, the things I’m going to start researching are: How to get a book published; Ways to publicize the book should we succeed in publishing it; Facts about cancer, children with cancer, families with cancer, etc. And I’ll also start looking into people, families, and children I can interview as well. I’ll try to do most of this myself, but I’m open to any suggestions any one has or any information they have that would help me put this together. So far, I’ve done a little bit of research on publishing and it does take some time to get it published. You’re main problem is finding someone to publish it for you, which could take time. Another alternative is self-publishing. Self-publishing would allow you to get copies of the book and have the book sold only locally, but it costs money to do that whereas the other option is free. Perhaps if we can’t find someone to actually publish it, we can have someone donate money to help us with self-publishing. Another problem I think we’ll have is the time constraints. I’d really like to make this work though, so if we can’t get it published by the event then I think that would be okay. I’ll try to get it done by then, but if not, I’ll continue my work with it and get it published later on down the road and we’ll do what we can to let the community know about it.
I’ll also try sending an email out to Julie Healey or Vanessa Simmons to ask them if they have any suggestions for making this work or resources to help us do so. I’d also love to hear what their thoughts on the idea are. I’ll probably send them a link to this blog. So, this is about the extent of my thoughts on this so far—it’s only a newly formed idea, after all—but I think it has a lot of potential. What do you guys think?

P.s. I'm also going to be working on writing letters to people of importance (famous people, for example) to see if we can get them to donate items such as a signed CD among other things. If anyone has suggestions on who to write letters to and what to ask for it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also, there's something I forgot to add in the post. We can have all the money made from selling the book (aside from the percentage that goes to the publisher) go to the Be a Star Foundation.
ReplyDeleteIf you need any help with anything just tell me and I'll do whatever you need me to do. I love this idea =]
ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks! I don't know of anything particular I need help with at this moment, but I'll definitely let you know! Let me know if you think of any more ideas :)

I love this idea. How would you get the interviews or the people to talk about? We could look around for connections and see if we can find someone to publish it for us. If we tell them our cause and everything, they might be willing to help us with it.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I was thinking of contacting the hospital or maybe talking to them the next time we go to volunteer and see if there are any families who would like to speak with us. We can also try to publicize our idea and sort of tell people that we're looking to create a book and see if anyone contacts us wanting to help and give us information about their story, whether they are a survivor or a family memeber of someone with cancer. I'm sure we'll be able to find people. And I think you're right. If we tell people our cause we have a better chance of getting the book published. Let me know if you find any connections that could help us out with any of this!

ReplyDeleteThat's Vanessa's email address if you don't already have it. It's easier to email her than Julie. She's super friendly and helpful~
I love this idea so much. I'm gonna help look up things about this and I'll also ask around about publishing and stuff. I'm going to ask my cousin, too, to see if he knows anything about it. Maybe he can help get a donation from the rather famous company he works for ^_~ (Starts with an 'M' and has a "soft" ending).
I'll also ask Doctor Duffey if she would be interested in giving us an interview at least. We have to ask her if she'd be willing to speak at the event as well.
Hopefully, we'll find someone to publish us. That would be so, so amazing. We'll all get right on writing to people \o/ I'm so excited~
Thanks Melissa! That would be really helpful! Let me know anything you can find out! I'm really excited too! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, and check out the other post too about Celebrities and music for the event if you haven't already :)

ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting website. It's expensive, but it has a page where you can get an estimate for self-printing. I ordered a free!Sample book from them XD I'll let you know when it gets here...if it gets here.
Chelsea, your idea is brilliant!!! I agree that our main problem with publishing the book will be dealing with a time constraint. However, I'm confident that we'll get many contributions. The sad truth is that this is because there are many kids with cancer. I'll gladly do any research I can, whether it's for information or for people. Please let me know.
ReplyDeleteAlso, maybe we can call some people we already know. There's a chance we know someone who knows someone who knows a guy who knows someone's sister that can help us with all this. Even if they aren't famous, I'm sure there are speakers that can come help us~
ReplyDeleteAlso also, we should start writing to local news papers to see if they'd be interested in taking a break from writing about how to log onto their website to do a story on us XD
OH. AND.
ReplyDeleteEven if we don't get the book done in time, we should keep going. I think it'd be important to publish something well and not rush if it looks like it still looks like we can't do it by, like, July. Be a Star foundation will be able to use them no matter what. And anyone who will be willing to take up our project next year can also sell them if they make this an annual thing.
Yeah, that's what I was saying in the post. Regardless if we can get it done in time of the event, I still want to publish it. i think it's a great idea and we could make sure to publicize despite the fact that the event is done and over with. I definitely want to continue with this project! Even after the festival, we can possibly work with the concert idea, like I suggested. Even when we all go to college after senior year we can try to plan events for the summer or keep up with helping the Be a Star Foundation from where we're at. No one has to, but I would really like to continue helping them. I'm raelly exciteda bout all of our ideas.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I sent an email to Vanessa asking her to take a look at this post and give us any suggestions or comments she has that she thinks will help.
ReplyDeleteAwesome~ I'm so excited~!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gorhamprinting.com/2prices/colorpages.htm is, i agree a little expensive, I'll ask my dad and some other people that can make professional bound books too for an estimate and we can get a really this idea going. LOVE it!!! U r brilliant Chelsea, give updates on the blog on what u might need help with and how everything is going. sometime soon we should probably have a meeting if not next week then during the summer, maybe try out the online chat thing that we plan to do and discuss it more. WOW! This is exciting! =D
ReplyDeleteThanks Celine! I'd really love to see if we could get it publisehd without self-publishing first, because it'd be cheaper, but definitley check into that as a backup. And yeah, we should definitely have another meeting soon!
