Hey everyone!
It’s Chelsea again. In my last post I mentioned that I was going to be working on sending letters to celebrities to see if we gain their help with raising awareness and money for our cause, and I’m going to elaborate on some more of my thoughts here. My first issue is where to send the letters to. Now, I can actually mail out letters to the address listed for fan mail, or I can send messages through the artists Facebook accounts. I was thinking of using Facebook because it ensures that they’ll get it faster and we could get a reply faster as well; also I think they’d be more likely to see it there. I know agents are responsible for reading a lot of their fan mail for them, but hopefully we can still get them to see it and get an actual reply.
There’s also the issue of who to write to. Some people that I know would appeal to the kids at the festival would be people like Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, and Justin Bieber. However, we might be able to get a greater response from a celebrity who is maybe from Florida or has worked with charities in the past. I’m currently researching that right now. This may include people that would be unknown to the kids at the festival, but widely known by other age groups. Do you think it would be a good idea to appeal to them as well? If another celebrity could donate signed items or money; come to our event; or publically speak about it to the press, it would tremendously help with raising awareness. Although our primary target for the festival is children, our primary target for raising awareness is everyone, and this could help.
Also, I know we thought about having celebrities donate signed items to auction off and raise money, but what about donating some of these signed items to the children with cancer? I think that would really make their day—to get an autograph from their favorite celebrity. Maybe we can interview the kids at the hospital and ask who their favorite celebrity is and see if we can get something donated to all of them—or, at the very least, a few of them.
Another idea I had is in regards to having live music for the festival. I don’t know if any of you know Maria Garcia, but she runs a music webzine, http://www.straightuprandom.com/, and interviews a lot of local (and even non-local) bands. If you guys wanted, I could talk to her and see if she knows of anyone who would like to perform at our event. I think having live music could draw in more people and help us raise even more money; However, it is primarily a kids event and I’m not sure if it’d be a good idea to have music that wouldn’t appeal to the children at all. We could just make a playlist of music they’d like and play that, alternating with kid’s karaoke instead. Or, maybe we can do both. We can have a band come and play for a little while and then have kid’s music and karaoke the rest of the time.
Honestly, we could probably have a whole separate event to raise money and awareness by having a few bands get together and perform—a sort of concert for charity. This could appeal to teenagers and even adults and further our awareness and raise a lot of money. I know we’ve already got a lot going on and it might be too much to try to have a whole other event, but if you guys are interested in the idea, then I can look into it. These were just a few questions, suggestions, and concerns I had in regards to all of this and I thought I’d see what everyone else thought about it. So please comment with your opinions on all of this. Thanks!

I think we definitely should appeal to all age groups as far as the items and stuff go. After all, any speakers we get aren't going to be talking to the children. Kids don't want to listen to that, they want to play ^_~ I think it would be wonderful to have items that can be auctioned off. The PTSA has done silent auctions. Maybe we can do something like that. If we do it right, it should run very smoothly and I think we could even make a little money off of it.
ReplyDeleteThe more local people the better. They're easier to talk to, easier to find, and just...easier in general. Not to mention it helps THEIR community, so they might be more willing to help~
Any live music, though, I think we should keep geared toward the children.
Okay thanks for your opinion! I think any live music should probably be geared towards the children too, it was just a suggestion. Also, what did you think of the idea about maybe having a seperate concert to raise more money and awareness? We don't even have to work on it right now, we could wait until after the event. Honestly, we can take all of this stuff we're doing past CAS hours and coninue helping after our event. I don't know if it'd be possible or how hard it'd be to organize, but I think it would definitely help raise money and awareness.
ReplyDeleteAnother great idea... I think that it'll be wonderful if we can auction off signed items. I just think that we'll be taken more seriously if our whole group (PLUS somebody from the Be A Star Froundation)sends messages or letters together. Maybe we could make a video and send it and send it to companies so that we can get a corporate sponsor. For example, a record company might send the signed items we're looking for if they see how serious we are about this through the video.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing... I can also talk to Maria. She's in my TOK class.
I dunno. I think we have our work cut out for us with just one event, but I would LOVE to keep doing things like this after everything. I think that would be a great thing to work toward for next summer. That way we'd have plenty of time to work on it without diving our attention.
ReplyDeleteI THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA, THOUGH, LET'S DO IT XD
Which Maria? Ajorna? Or the other Maria?
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm totally on top of looking for sponsors and donations from companies. I'm waiting on the paperwork from Be a Star. Vanessa said she's looking into it to see if it's allowed or whatever. I'm going to ask about it again when I give them the update on the carwash.
Okay! I'll mention it to Maria to see if it'd be a possiblity. It would definitley take some time to set up so it would be a great idea for next summer, like you said. We can mention it and see if it could happen right now and then devote our time to it after our Art Festival. Lauren's Idea about a video is a good idea actually. Maybe we can make a really awesome video and try to get it aired on television. That would really help! Also, having someone from the Be a Star Foundation write letters or at the very least, verify ours, would be a good way to show we're serious and authentic too.
ReplyDeleteOh, by the way, that was me who posted that last comment. (Chelsea) I forgot to put my name.
ReplyDeleteOh,and It's Maria Garcia. I'm pretty sure I said that in the post.
ReplyDeleteWe should put a video together with a collection of clips that the news could put on. I have a neighbor that has connections to News Channel 5 AND the phone number to someone at News Channel 5 that supposedly would LOVE to help Be a Star. So that will totally go on the list~
ReplyDeleteWe need a name for our event. Like...now.
Oops. Sorry Chelsea. You definitely did say Maria Garcia. I didn't make the connection that that was someone at out school XD Silly me.
ReplyDeleteHaha It's okay. And yeah, that would be great! We should work on ideas for a video now too. Everyone can start coming up with ideas and we can have a meeting at school next week, maybe, and then post our final decisions on the blog. Also, we do need to come up with a name for our event really soon. Should we come up with a name for our...group?..too? Because, we're hosting this event but we might host other events in the future (like the conceret) and we might be publishing a book among other things. I think it'd be great if we could have a way to distinguish ourselves and group all of the things we're doing together. Can we create our own sort of organization name for events and things we do and say we're partnered with Be a Star Foundation since they recieve all the money and we just work towards raising awareness. We can be our own volunteer/awareness raising group. Is that possible?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I asked Vanessa about that and she said we can say we're partnered with them. She asked us about a name for our group, but we just told her for now we're Suncoast students. I think we should definitely thing of a name, though. For the event AND our group. It's just so harrrd. @_@
ReplyDeleteI know!! I'll brainstorm some names and hopefully we can come up with something by next weekend. That's our goal!! :) I'll try to think of some sort of motto or something for us too.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I was thinking about the event, and since it is Halloween themed, maybe we can have people in our group dress up as different famous people (Hannah Montana, Selena Gomez, etc) And then you can sing karoke for one of their songs to give the kids an example of karoke and everything. lol. I'm not sure if anyone in our group would be willing to do that, but it's a suggestion.
Oh, we have a motto: "Give us $5 and we'll get all up in your grill"
ReplyDelete...that was a joke, of course.
AND I WOULD SO BE WILLING TO DO THAT! I can't sing at all, BUT WHO CARES? I'LL LIP SYNC IF I HAVE TO XD
Haha awesome motto. And Yeah, i'd be willing to, too. I'm okay at singing, I think, when I practice. lol. But, hey, I can practice and learn a bunch of their songs. I have 5 months, so I think I could work something out by then lol. Singing in front of a bunch of people is usually something I'd never do...but it's for kids with cancer!! You can be Hannah Montana, and I'll be Selena Gomez, and...Juliana can be Justin Bieber! lol. Jk. :) Haha michael can do it! Seriously though, since we can't have famous people preform (or it's unlikely), having us get up there and give our own concert could make it fun....or amusing, at the very least. lol.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Yes!
ReplyDeleteI think having us go would almost be a better idea. It's cute and more community-ish. We'd probably have more luck just asking for a signed CD and letter anyway.
Exactly. It shows we really care and I think the kids would like it and it would be fun! Besides, I think havng an actual famous person there would make things too complicated, really. We'd probably need a bigger event area and the event would change to a concert instead of an art festival. So asking for a sgined CD would be best, like you said. We need to get everyone else in on this concert idea though! Do you think everyone else would be willing to do it? Also, do you think we'd need to practice at all? Like get together and organize who's going to be what person, or sing what songs, and when, etc? This should all be...interesting. lol.
ReplyDeleteI'll contact some celebs, too. But I'm going to send letters by mail with a picture of them or something for them to sign already and just hope I get it back. I read that if you send something and include the return envelope with stamps and everything on it already it's easier for them.
ReplyDeleteWe'll definitely need to practice. I figure we should practice songs and stuff while we're building the games and whatnot for the event. We'll start this summer. We should rotate meeting at each other's houses or libraries or whatever to make traveling easier for everyone. Costumes and stuff...well, we'll work on it XD
Before we do anything, we need to work out a schedule and budget for the event. We need to know how everything will be set up, where things will be, how much space we'll have, how many volunteers we'll need and so on before we do any of that. We should set up a meeting for, like...the first Saturday after school lets out.
Yeah, that sounds good. I think you're right and sending all of that stuff will help us get a faster reply. And yeah, schedules and budgets defintely come first. Although when we do start practicing songs and stuff...I don't think the library would be a very good place to practice lol. But as for all of our other meetings, it would work out. I think rotating houses is a good idea too.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah. The Librarians would totally love it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we'll save THOSE meetings for less...quiet places~
Hahahaha I love this. One of us has to know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows a celebrity we can get. Or at least get something from them. If we start advertising this thing like crazy, we'll get something.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Maria can be helpful, too. She has connections to bands.
And I will totally dress up as somebody. XD
About the video, I can definitely make one. I've been in TV Production for like 3 years =]
ReplyDeleteI have a video camera and software. But what exactly would the video have?
Love all the other ideas by the way, but I'll only sing if the kids don't mind my tone deafness xp
